Every habit runs in a simple loop: a cue that starts it, the action itself, and a reward that makes the brain want to repeat it. Begin by laying out your own loop, without judging it yet.

Why does it work?
The split into cue, routine and reward comes from modern habit research on how behaviors are maintained (Wood & Rünger, Annual Review of Psychology, 2016). Reviewing your own behavior without self-criticism is also linked to actually resuming it after a dip. Self-criticism tends instead to make people give up altogether (Pychyl & Sirois, 2016).
