Why does it work?
Mehta et al., BMJ Open (2018): a month’s break among moderate-to-heavy drinkers improved insulin resistance, weight and blood pressure. de Visser et al., Health Psychology (2016): Dry January participants drank less six months later (self-selected sample, observational). The exercise is aimed at habitual drinking. For daily drinking or physical symptoms when stopping, abrupt cessation can be dangerous; seek care instead.
