Why does it work?
Narrative identity research (McAdams) shows that stories with redemption sequences, where difficult events are given a continuation of learning or growth, are linked to better wellbeing, including prospectively (Adler et al. 2015, review). Actively rewriting one's story is less studied than the link itself, but the mechanism shares ground with expressive writing.
