The ObservatoryDavid and the Tuesdays
The first small step out of a loneliness that had crept in.
One evening, out of sheer resignation in front of an empty fridge door, David worked out that he had not had a real conversation with anyone in eighteen days. Not counting the cashier at the grocery store. He had lived alone since the divorce and worked from home for a company in another city. The weeks had a way of slipping past him without a single person looking him in the eye for real.
What had happened was not dramatic. It was much quieter than that — a slow thinning, where he declined one dinner invitation, then another, and after a while simply stopped being asked at all. The loneliness hadn't crept in as one event you could point to afterwards. It had crept in as a habit, built stone by stone from a thousand small non-showings that none of them noticed on their own.
