Choose something small and near: a cup of coffee somewhere nice, a walk, a conversation, a film, a dinner. It should be doable in the coming days, and it should cost little in money or energy.

Why does it work?
Studies of holiday trips suggest that people who were about to travel were happier before the trip than those who were not, which the researchers interpret as joy in anticipation. It is an association in observational data, not a proven causal link, and it concerns trips rather than everyday small things. The exercise uses the idea on a small scale.
