The ObservatoryGeorg and the bench
When the calendar empties, meaning rarely comes back as a project — more often as a bench, a question and a name.
On the first Monday as a pensioner, Georg woke at six out of old habit and lay in the dark listening to the fact that nothing needed him. Forty-one years at the same workshop. A gold watch, a cake, a card everyone had signed. Now: a Tuesday that looked exactly like a Monday.
The first few weeks he cleaned the storeroom, then the garage, then the storeroom again. His wife Maj said nothing, but he saw that she saw. It wasn't the rest that was the problem. It was that no one counted on him any more. At the workshop young lads had come in with broken things and left with them whole. That had been his place in the world, and it had gone home with the keys when he handed them in.
