The ObservatoryMovement is medicine for mood
What the research actually says about exercise and mood, and why ten minutes in nature goes further than you'd think.
Of everything we know about mental well-being, few things have such strong support and are taken so lightly as movement. We think of exercise as something for the body — weight, fitness, muscles. But its effect on mood is at least as well documented, and it requires far less than most people think.
A major review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (Singh et al., 2023) pooled over ninety reviews and just over a thousand studies. It concluded that physical activity has a meaningful effect on symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychological distress — on average medium-sized effects compared with usual care. This does not mean exercise replaces treatment when you are unwell. But it does mean that movement is one of the most reliable tools we have for influencing how we feel, and one of the most underused.

Why does it work?
Singh et al. (2023), British Journal of Sports Medicine: an umbrella review of over ninety systematic reviews that found meaningful effects of physical activity on symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychological distress, with medium-sized effects compared with usual care, largest at higher intensity. Research on the additional effect of movement in natural settings ("green exercise") is more limited and less consistent than the main finding.
